The Most Dangerous Game, I remember having it read and acted out by a substitute teacher in High School. The sub also did Leiningen Versus the Ants. TCM had the movie, and make the film worth watching.

June 28, 2017

While watching a Yankee game, I saw a "Baltimore Chop." In January 1963, I had this comic book.

It was the first time I had heard the term. From this page by a character called "Chopper."

A Baltimore chop is a ball that is hit sharply downward to produce a high bouncing ground ball. An ideal chop will bounce so high that the batter can leg it out for an infield single by the time the ball has come down for a fielder to field it.

Another strange sports story, Phil Jackson fired. I admire and like the man, but it was time to launch him.

Big Brother 19 starts tonight, I can't help myself, I'll be watching it. It gives you many insights to people you would normally have nothing to do with, ever. I always learn a new phrase or slang.

June 21, 2017 -- Summer Solstice

On the summer solstice, the sun rises just over the structure’s Heel Stone and hits the Altar Stone dead center.

Some shots from my Peru trip. Intipunku, or the Sun Gate. Great views from a high altitude, 2,720 meters (8,924 feet). I do not think it has anything special for the Summer Solstice.

The “Temple of the Sun,” or Torreón, has an elliptical design.

A rock inside the temple could have served as an altar. During the June solstice the rising sun shines directly into one of the temple’s windows, and this indicates an alignment between the window, rock and solstice sun.

Two $20 wins ! Plus a $1 win from the Mega.

Again with the Big Sleep:
Philip Marlowe: She tried to sit in my lap while I was standing up.

Saw Journey to the Center of the Earth on HBO on Demand last night. The Dimetrodons looked a little off. Wiki has this:"The giant Dimetrodons depicted at the center of the Earth action sequence were actually rhinoceros iguanas with large, glued-on make-up appliances added to their backs."

The Dimetrodons precede dinosaurs by about 40 million years. They are not reptiles. Wiki again: "Dimetrodon is assigned to the "stem-mammals" or "non-mammalian synapsids", a group traditionally called "mammal-like reptiles"."

Be Like the Fox: Machiavelli's Lifelong Quest for Freedom
by Erica Benner or Be Like the Fox: Machiavelli in His World. The first is the international edition and was reviewed in today's NYT.

“The lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. One must therefore be a fox to recognize traps, and a lion to frighten wolves.”

― Niccolò Machiavelli, The Prince

I also thought of a Wendell Berry poem:

Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front

Love the quick profit, the annual raise,
vacation with pay. Want more
of everything ready-made. Be afraid
to know your neighbors and to die.
And you will have a window in your head.
Not even your future will be a mystery
any more. Your mind will be punched in a card
and shut away in a little drawer.
When they want you to buy something
they will call you. When they want you
to die for profit they will let you know.
So, friends, every day do something
that won’t compute. Love the Lord.
Love the world. Work for nothing.
Take all that you have and be poor.
Love someone who does not deserve it.
Denounce the government and embrace
the flag. Hope to live in that free
republic for which it stands.
Give your approval to all you cannot
understand. Praise ignorance, for what man
has not encountered he has not destroyed.
Ask the questions that have no answers.
Invest in the millennium. Plant sequoias.
Say that your main crop is the forest
that you did not plant,
that you will not live to harvest.
Say that the leaves are harvested
when they have rotted into the mold.
Call that profit. Prophesy such returns.
Put your faith in the two inches of humus
that will build under the trees
every thousand years.
Listen to carrion — put your ear
close, and hear the faint chattering
of the songs that are to come.
Expect the end of the world. Laugh.
Laughter is immeasurable. Be joyful
though you have considered all the facts.
So long as women do not go cheap
for power, please women more than men.
Ask yourself: Will this satisfy
a woman satisfied to bear a child?
Will this disturb the sleep
of a woman near to giving birth?
Go with your love to the fields.
Lie easy in the shade. Rest your head
in her lap. Swear allegiance
to what is nighest your thoughts.
As soon as the generals and the politicos
can predict the motions of your mind,
lose it. Leave it as a sign
to mark the false trail, the way
you didn’t go. Be like the fox
who makes more tracks than necessary,
some in the wrong direction.

Practice resurrection.

Happy Father's Day ! Mimosas start the day rather than beer.

This book is being heavily promoted. I'll give it a try. I don't read much fiction.

I am interested in seeing James Mason's Brutus. Ordered today with a 20% discount.

Point / counterpoint, Antony's speech as a rhetoric primer.

Deep State is a recurring theme on the internet. Crazy stuff, but at least I know the Bilderberg reference. This was prominent in the Trump twitter account comments and then it was removed. Perhaps anti-semitism undertones ?

The Spirit of New York.

Stopped alongside Lady Liberty for a while.

One of my cards.

Hung jury, I wonder what the vote was. This is from a Mad Magazine spoof of I-Spy.

June 16, 2017

For my Minneapolis trip, my cousin lives near the Fitzgerald home in St. Paul.

Time to re-read The Great Gatsby. The echoes of the Midwest flow through the narrative:

"That's my middle-west--not the wheat or the prairies or the lost Swede towns but the thrilling, returning trains of my youth and the street lamps and sleigh bells in the frosty dark and the shadows of holly wreaths thrown by lighted windows on the snow. I am part of that, a little solemn with the feel of those long winters, a little complacent from growing up in the Carraway house in a city where dwellings are still called through decades by a family's name. I see now that this has been a story of the West, after all--Tom and Gatsby, Daisy and Jordan and I, were all Westerners, and perhaps we possessed some deficiency in common which made us subtly unadaptable to Eastern life."

"In two weeks it'll be the longest day in the year....Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it."
The Great Gatsby - Daisy
Chapter 1

On June 21st in NYC it will be 15 hours and 6 minutes of daylight.
