Watched The Naked and the Dead, I had read the book ages ago. The use of "Fug" was amusing. The movie was good but the flashbacks were jarring. Directed by Raoul Walsh. Aldo Ray, Raymond Massey and Joey Bishop were excellent. Hey Max Showalter! I recognize you from It's a Good Life, Twilight Zone. Max was also known as Casey Adams.

Nice Thirties comedy on TCM this morning. Roland Young is great as "Sahib." Douglas Fairbanks Jr. is also engaging. Fairbanks had an incredible WWII record.

No more peaches, alas corn about to stop. Silver Queen is preferred. This was a good year.

Groping for trout in a peculiar river: A Shakespearean joke used in Measure for Measure, where groping describes a method of fishing by feeling for them in the water with the hands; peculiar was already in use to describe a mistress, much in the same way a cat or an owl might be a witch’s peculiar.

LUCIO

Our doubts are traitors
And make us lose the good we oft might win
By fearing to attempt. Go to Lord Angelo,
And let him learn to know, when maidens sue,
Men give like gods; but when they weep and kneel,
All their petitions are as freely theirs
As they themselves would owe them.

Finally saw To Have and Have Not. I agree it is sort of Casablanca lite. One big difference: Bacall and Bogie are white-hot, where Bogie and Bergman just act. Dan Seymour as the "heavy" is not quite French but wears a beret to try and pull it off.
