April 29, 2012

Boy, what a smack-down. Lebron James takes round one with a lot of help from the Refs. Nonetheless, the Miami team defense designed to stop Carmelo Anthony was brilliant and flawlessly executed. Losing Shumpert and having Chandler sick with the Flu didn't help either. Lets go Knicks ! Give it your best.

Watched The Third Man last night. I had never seen it. Odd, since I could play the theme on a Guitar at thirteen. Love that music.

Trip to Smorgasburg with a side trip to the Brooklyn Brewery. Lunch washed down with brews.

$6 gets you superior Italian Pulled Pork: Porchetta. Includes some crackling.

Real good mini-cheescakes : BiteMeCheesecakes. Their LIMONCELLO MERINGUE is fabulous.

Still one of the best sandwiches ever made : Bocata.

Brooklyn Brewery tasting room has five brews for $20.

Crazy four-eyed Dumbo Street Art in Williamsburg.

Lots of publicity for this book. Release is May 1. Will pick it up soon thereafter. The New Yorker excerpt of the day of JFK's assassination was riveting.

Just out in Paperback and after coupon and member discount - $12.50. The Information: A History, a Theory, a Flood by James Gleick.

I remember the second album when it first came out. Played it over and over in my dorm room in the Mid-West. I had seen them at Woodstock and I made everyone I knew aware of how good they were. Just made my own CD of the Second Album sprinkled with Rock of Ages live cuts featuring Levon Helm.

More Lilies. Went to P.E. and D.D. Seafood and got Flounder. Will be making Fish and Chips.

Asparagus at $4 a bunch. A bit much, always remember Babe Ruth's line to a Society matron about refusing some offered Asparagus: ""Because it makes my pee stink, ma'am."

Guy holding the dog caught my attention, holding it like a child. The dog looked happy.

Beer for the weekend is Foster's Oil Can. The steel can looked so much like an oil can, Americans gave it the nickname Foster's Oil Can, the name has stuck with it for more than 30 years.

Nyro's son, hip-hop artist Gil Bianchini, accepted on his mother's behalf Saturday night in Cleveland. About time !

Big game, they are all big games from here on in. I don't want just a good showing, they can beat these guys.

Well if you don't make foul shots and you allow offensive rebounds, you lose.

Beer for the weekend is Brooklyn Summer Ale.

                                                              Bees at the Greenmarket.

Gloria Pizza reopens in Queens. Classic slice, great crust. I remember going to the old Main Street site. I like other styles more, i.e. more cheese ! But, this is a fine example of a certain style.

New monthly Food event. Mostly desserts , but I picked up a nice tomato sauce. Lots of free samples.

Still lots of flowers.

P.E. and D.D. Seafood and Rao's Vodka Sauce made an outstanding combo over Linguini.

Carmelo finally comes through in the clutch. The Knicks moved into a tie for seventh place with the 76ers -- one game ahead of the ninth-place Bucks in the battle for the eighth and final playoff spot. Big win.

Watched a lot of movies over the weekend. Moneyball was OK but Jonah Hill was terrific.
Bridesmaids was uneven with some funny moments. Melissa McCarthy was a revelation, she was that good.

April 7, 2012 - WTC Memorial

On the way, a Firefighter tribute.

Also, on the way, just liked the many colors. Visiting the memorial is not easy. You have to have a ticket which can be ordered on-line or you can get them at 20 Vesey Street. After that, the wait at the entrance is about a half-hour, including magnetometers.

It was Palm Sunday.

Beautiful and the water was soothing. The visit will be better later when the on-site Museum opens which may be September 2012.

Well worth a visit.

April 7, 2012

Ramps are here. $3 a bunch for a clump of weeds. Tasty weeds , though. Got some Flounder from P.E. and D.D. Seafood and will make a Ramps, Mushroom and Shallots sauce.

Lilies for Easter.

Benedict Cumberbatch is everywhere all of a sudden. He was excellent in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, am waiting for PBS to start showing Sherlock (May 6 - 20 is Season 2 which includes The Hounds of Baskerville), and he is the voice of Smaug in The Hobbit. I liked this new version of Tinker but I feel for anyone who is not familiar with the book or the Alec Guinness version. Not much exposition in the movie, they just start moving with the plot.

April 1, 2012

Roses for start.

Then, Dom Perignon and Godiva Truffles ay the Millenium Hilton.

Incredible difference from last year.

The amount of tourists down here is mind-boggling.

The Memorial pools from above.

The original Iron Cross is now gone and replaced by this.

Read the reviews and had to get it. Fascinating stuff, appropriate Palm Sunday, Easter week reading.
