August 14, 2009 - The Bacchae
Shakespeare Ticket Line, Queens Center Mall.
Tickets at 1:00 P.M.
Belvedere Castle.
Continuing the Cross-Dressing theme. The Bacchae at the Delacorte.
Well, the play was a bit of a train-wreck. It tried to grab
you by the lapels and say: "Listen, this is art damn it!"
Jonathan Groff , the former star of Hair and Spring Awakening
stars as Dionysus. He plays the God as Jim Morrison, interesting
take, but the play suffers with this mixture of modern nods and
epic tragedy. Same thing with Anthony Mackie as Pentheus,
interesting take, but it doesn't serve the drama. They are both
very good actors doing the best they can.
Agave, played by Joan MacIntosh, unknowingly murders her son,
Pentheus , and shows up on stage with his blood-soaked head. She
tears up the stage with her grief, no modern nods needed here.
I read the play while waiting on line and read some criticism. One
thing about this play, the action is all off-set and then described by
others. That's the way the Greeks did it.
I loved the Chorus and the Philip Glass Music. In keeping with
honoring Dionysus, two bottles of wine were consumed during the play.
All in all, an interesting evening. The play failed, but it was
an honest attempt to bring this bloody classic to stage. The cast
did a great job with tough material.
Here's the real deal:
