June 30, 2010 - Road Trip
Gearing up for a Road-Trip. Took the day off, will be on the road all day and some of the night.
The NYT Food Section today has two great articles: 1) American Pale Ales and 2) 101 Fast Recipes for Grilling.
Hoffman Playground has one of those donated pianos. The two-week project, devised by British artist Luke Jerram, is making its first U.S. stop in New York.

Ok, doing the Sinatra style Veal meatballs from Patsy's. Also, some Philly Cheese-steak for good measure.
To clean the palate, a little Pistachio Ice from the Lemon Ice King.
Going on my annual Golf trip in July. For the trip I made two CDs: 1) Hamptons 70s and 2) Old Man Jukebox. The Old Man Jukebox CD is a compilation of tunes from an Old Man bar we used to hang out in. Glenn Miller, Mills Brothers, even Don Ho, it is a trip down memory lane. Some of it is still worth listening to.

Stuck on the 59th Street Bridge and not feeling Groovy.
Arrived later than usual, but not too crowded.
At the Greenmarket they were giving out this magazine. Great recipe:
Patsy's Meatballs
Apr 30 2010 Rachel Wharton Recipes
1½ pounds chopped veal
1 whole egg
1 egg yolk
1 clove of garlic, minced
2 tablespoons grated romano cheese
Salt and pepper
Chopped fresh parsley
½ cup of breadcrumbs
Pinch of oregano
Mix thoroughly and form into 2 ½ inch meatballs. Preheat olive oil in skillet to 350 degrees (oil should cover half the meatball when frying) Fry meatballs in olive oil, 2 minutes on each side. Take out of oil. Place the meatballs in simmering tomato sauce and cook another 10-15 minutes.
Corn has arrived. The above is from Miglorelli Farms. It was quite tasty and fresh. Lucy's Greenmarket Report states that Sycamore Farms will have their Corn this Wednesday. Yipee !!
McNeill's Oatmeal Stout starts the weekend Beers.
Man, need a light refreshing beer sometimes, Blue Point Summer Ale does the trick.
This Beer is more like Mead.
I have a CD of Heaney reading his translation. Heorot was the Mead-Hall.
So Hrothgar decided
he would build a mead-hall,
the greatest the world had
ever seen, or even imagined.
There he would share out
to young and old alike
all that God gave him
(except for public lands and men's lives).
Heorot means "Hall of the Hart" (male deer.)
2:30, the saga continues.

Hope to see The Winter's Tale this week.

June 21, 2010 - Summer Solstice
Summer solstice arrived in the northern hemisphere on Monday, June 21st at 7:28am (EDT). Sol + stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still."
"In two weeks it'll be the longest day in the year....Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it."

Beautiful morning at the Greenmarket.
New TGIF at 16th Street. The space used to be the Vegetarian Zen Palate.
Flowers still dominate. The good seasonal stuff, including corn, starts around July 4th.
Sugar Snap peas were going for $6 a pound but at Sycamore Farms, from Middletown, NY they were $4.25 a pound.
Different Sunflower look.
Terhune Farms had Raspberries at $7 a pint. Sweet and Tart, I made some Raspberry Short Cake with fresh whipped Cream.
World Cup Soccer is thriving in Bars throughout NYC.
Ron Artest is a great redemption story. Actually bigger than Kobe's because Artest had more problems and was not a Superstar.
Incredible interview. Like nothing else out there, what you see is what you get, no B.S.

Beer for the weekend is Guinness Draught.
Great seventh game, I rooted for the lesser of two evils. The Lakers also have Phil Jackson and Ron Artest. Ron was hilarious , he thanked his Psychiatrist.
US was lucky to get a tie. The call by Referee Koman Coulibaly taking away the winning goal was a disgrace.
Subway Series time. Go Yankees !
